Add a little bit of sparkle to your usual beauty routine by embellishing your nails with glitter nail polish.
Depending on the look you are going for; glitter nail polish can be worn as subtle or bold as you intend it to be. I am sporting a look similar to trend No. 3 (as charted below) using a light pink Essie nail polish with a bold gold/silver glitter accent polish from OPI. I have been adoring the look as the week goes on and honestly; who doesn't love a bit of glitz and glam?
Glitter and sparkles are all over the map this holiday season and this is the perfect way to ease yourself into the holiday spirit. Start with a neutral application if you are averse to the bold look and build out from to where you are comfortable. As a subtle reminder: a little goes a long way!
Shine on!

This product is major.
I can't say enough about Revlon's Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain. This product provides all the benefits of a stain/tint product but applies and feels like your favorite lip balm. The color can be intensified by the amount you apply. If you desire a super, color-rich lip; you'll want to apply two or three coats. If you prefer just a subtle look; apply one coat.
Update: I applied my Balm Stain at 8am this morning and it lasted through breakfast and two cups of coffee, lunch and some afternoon snacks and the stain is still on my lips. No joke!
As evidenced above, you can't beat the stay-power of this product.

Calm, Cool & Collected
Do you have a critical summer interview on the horizon? Read these tips to help you feel calm, cool and collected during the hot summer months.
- Wear one less item in transit - On the way to the interview, wear one less item than you plan to wear at the actual interview. For example, carry your jacket or blazer. This way, you'll be cooler in transit and your jacket will be crisp. Once you put it on, you don't have to worry as much about the dampness of your shirt becoming too visible.
- Wear comfortable shoes - It's tempting to wear a pair of heels, but during the summer, it's better to opt for comfortable flats or dress shoes. Dressy sandals can also work well, depending on the dress code of the business. Whatever you do, don't show up wearing flip-flops. Personally, I always think that heels look more professional than flats but make sure your heels are comfortable and you aren't walking like a wobbly giraffe!
- Give yourself 15 minutes to cool down - Allow yourself extra time to cool off before your interview time. Depending on where you are going, spend a few minutes in the bathroom or at a nearby business to get refreshed and gather your thoughts. This is the perfect time to put some cold water on your face or neck. It's also a good idea to always carry a nice handkerchief for just this situation. Once you're cooled off, you'll feel more confident about the interview.
- Select garments that don't show sweat - It's best to wear fabrics that have a little bit of Lycra, to prevent wrinkles and stay away from linens and other fabrics that tend to show sweat or that look rumpled easily. Plan for the hottest day, and anything less will be a pleasant surprise.
- Bring along some breath strips - To feel fresh, it's a bad idea to put on more cologne or perfume. On hot days, the overwhelming perfume smell can trigger allergies even in those who aren't as sensitive to it. Instead, get a pack of breath strips that dissolve quickly in your mouth. It will give you fresher breath and can even make you smell better overall.

Workin' Nine to Five
So I have been “back
to work” for approximately a week now and one thing is for sure; I need
to keep my office diet in-check! I'm now being tempted by the break room goodies, caffeinated
sodas and coffee pick-me-ups, lunch outings, corporate parties and special
functions. Now that I have an
expectation for what I'm up against, I am feeling
more prepared and motivated this week to put my nutrition back on track! In an effort to discover new, healthy snack
choices; I came across this informative list of snack items.
SnackAttack: 10 Yummy Low-Calorie Snacks by Arizona Foothills Magazine
- Hard Boiled Eggs: For a natural protein boost in the middle of your busy day, enjoy one or two hard-boiled eggs. One medium hard-boiled egg delivers a host of essential vitamins at just 81 calories.
- Tomato Topped with Balsamic Dressing: Ok so it’s not the authentic Caprese Salad from Italy, but it’s pretty close, and minus the fat! You can’t go wrong with stuffing your face with tomatoes at only 30 calories a pop (medium-sized). This tasty veggie is packed full of vitamins and minerals, most notably vitamin C and vitamin A.
- Celery with Peanut Butter: Did you know you actually burn off the amount of calories in a stick of celery just by chewing it? This means it has negative calories! Spread some low-fat peanut butter on these crunchy green veges and take in some good fats as it is a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids.
- Cup of Cottage Cheese and a Grapefruit: Dieters often steer clear of cheeses because they are chock-full of fat. Well delicious cottage cheese is the exception to the rule… And no it won’t give you “cottage cheese thighs.” This healthy snack is low in fat and carbs, and very high in protein — just what you need to decrease that body fat percentage. Add a grapefruit to the mix, because this special fruit is low in calories and sodium, high in potassium and fat burning enzymes. Perfect!
- Sargento’s Low-Fat String Cheese with an Apple: If cottage cheese isn’t your cup of tea or you’d like something more mobile, try healthy string cheese, like Reduced Fat, Low Moisture Mozzarella String Cheese by Sargento. This particular brand is filled with snacks at only 50 calories each with just 2.5 grams of total fat. However, this isn’t going to stop your stomach from rumbling, so throw in a juicy apple rich in Vitamin C.
- TCBY’s Fat- & Sugar-Free Frozen Yogurt: Who would have thought stopping at your local TCBY would actually be healthy for you? Well it is when you choose the fat- and sugar-free frozen yogurt. Just three ounces of a fat-free brand will only set you back 100 calories.
- 14 Whole Natural Almonds: Nuts are jam-packed with fat… good fat! A measly 14 almonds, in particular, are not only just 80 calories, but have 3 grams of protein, 7 grams total fat and 1.5 grams dietary fiber.
- Hummus with Whole Wheat Pita Bread: This Middle Eastern creation is delicious and super healthy. It is filled with fiber and dripping with olive oil for our essential fat burning, fatty acids. Choose whole wheat pita bread for dipping. This has less simple sugars and even more fiber!
- Fiber One Yogurt with a Banana: For all you gals with a sweet tooth, yogurt is the healthiest way to get your daily fix. Try Fiber One’s non-fat, 50-calorie yogurt packs. These delicious treats are filled with fiber, which will help your belly feel more satisfied. Toss in a nutritious banana for some more fiber, potassium and vitamin B6.
- 100% Dried Fruit Bars: Try these delish Trader Joe’s Handmade Fruit Bars… if you haven’t already. You’ll be hooked! They are less than 50 calories each.
TIP: For years my
mother has prepared her hard-boiled eggs with a dash of white vinegar. This is the best trick for making easy to peel
hard boiled eggs. Follow the simple steps
below for the perfect, hassle-free hard boiled egg:
- Place water in a large pot. Add desired number of eggs. Add 2 to 3 teaspoons of white vinegar to the water and a pinch of salt and bring it to a boil for two minutes.
- Cover the pot and remove it from the heat. Let it stand for 11 minutes. When eggs are done, remove them from water and allow them to cool.
- Crack the shell at both ends of the egg and begin removing the eggshell, which should come off easily.
Happy Monday, ya’ll!

Sleepless in Seattle
Seattle Skyline |
Okay, life update. I
have officially moved back to the PNW and couldn’t be happier about the
decision! I landed a contract position
with Media Plus+ to fulfill the role as Political Media Coordinator through the
remainder of the political season.
I have had the pleasure of spending a lot of time with my family and my
boyfriend, Mac, who has just recently finished his fishing season in
Alaska. I have enjoyed practicing yoga
on the beach, hiking and camping in the Cascades, drinking lots of coffee and
revisiting with old friends. I am sorely
missing my sweet dog, Bella, and all of my Flagstaff friends; but, I am looking
forward to becoming a Seattleite and taking full advantage of this fantastic
city!
Side note; I’ve stumbled into a fairly bleak and bland looking
cubicle and need to stay up to speed with the trend-setting, power chicks I
work with. Any suggestions on how to dress my cubicle up without going overboard? I was thinking
a few framed pictures, a desk lamp, a nice calendar, etc. Am I missing anything?
Happy trails and here we go!

Blonde + Ombre = Blombre
I don't think I need to do much explaining on the blonde ombre. The look is trendy yet sensational and effortless. What do you think about these blombre styles? I think these are some of the best examples, yet!
Let's do some name dropping, shall we? Can you recommend any hairstylists in your area that are pros at mastering the ombre look?

Put the Clutch In
A vibrant clutch adds the perfect amount of flair to any summer outfit. Realistically, size does matter. The BIGGER the better. Don't be afraid to make a serious statement when selecting this must-have summer accessory. Dare to be bold and invest in an over-sized, envelope-style; neon, floral or sparkly metallic clutch. Tis the season to strut your stuff; why not carry an attention-grabbing clutch while you're at it?

Drugstore Essentials
Ahhh,
there are so many fun and exciting things going on in my life right now and I’m
finding it hard to concentrate on what I’m supposed to be doing, momentarily,
so I’m writing a blog post in lieu of alternative productive activities!
Drugstore
skin care items worth purchasing:
In an effort to lower
the cost of my beauty product budget and a desperate need for quality face moisturization;
I selected Garnier’s Skin Naturals Moisture
Rescue Refreshing Gel-Cream as the “summer drink” for my parched face. I bought this product in anticipation that I
would use up the remainder of my daily face moisturizer, Clinique DramaticallyDifferent Gel Moisturizing Gel, sooner than later. I finally got around to religiously using
this gel cream in the evenings and as-needed for daily use and have been awestruck
by the quality of this product. This product delivers all the benefits you
would find in a designer skin care brand but at a fraction of the price. The product does an outstanding job locking
in moisture and does not make your face appear greasy when worn throughout the
day. This refreshing gel-cream will also
help you create that natural, dewy look we all aspire to have! Don’t let the low sticker-price detour you
from buying this product. At an
astounding $8 to $9 per tub, you won’t feel guilty applying liberally and
often. Sit back and watch the magic take
place! I am so happy I discovered this
knock-out product.
This is the absolute perfect “summer” addition to any skin care regimen. I bought this product because I was looking
for a non-invasive alternative to a daily facial scrub. After peddling over many other alternatives, I’m
so glad I chose Neutrogena’s Grapefruit Foaming Scrub. This product smells magical and couldn’t be
more refreshing. I’ve enjoyed working this
scrub into my daily showering regimen.
The product does a good job eliminating the harmful dirt, dead skin and
bacteria which are all notorious for creating breakouts. Additionally, the gentle micro-beads work to
polish the skin with visible results. The
product does include some Salicylic Acid acne medicine, but does not cause
irritation. The Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne
Wash Pink Grapefruit Foaming Scrub is a refreshing alternative to other daily
facial scrubs and I will definitely repeat the purchase in the future.
Look no further for removing tough eye makeup then the coveted Almay
Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover Pads. I have
been using these makeup remover pads for a long time and haven’t found a more
effective solution for removing stubborn eye makeup. The pads are the perfect size and come
pre-moistened. They are composed of a
soft solution that doesn’t irritate the eye and is not too oily (which is often
the problem with most eye makeup removers). Before using the product, I would
recommend washing the face and using the pad to do the extra “clean up”. A
reliable product at a great price? There
is no better solution!
I'm curious; what are your favorite drugstore products?

Robust Reading
I have made it to the Pacific NW and what a welcoming
relief! The flight, comfortable. The people, warm. The scenery,
breathtaking. I am very much looking
forward to retracing steps and experiences I once overlooked in my youth. The PNW has so much to offer and I am feeling
a wealth of inspiration!
Let me tell you about two books that I picked up at Half Price Books a few days ago and have since enjoyed.
“It is well-documented that working hard isn't enough to
keep your professional star rising: Self-promotion is recognized as one of the
most important attributes for getting ahead. But learning to share your talents
and successes without coming across as smug or rehearsed is a tricky skill.
Now, Peggy Klaus, top communication and leadership coach, has developed a
program that will teach anyone to brag - and get away with it. Filled with
practical examples of ways in which people in various work-life stages can
promote themselves, Klaus teaches readers to communicate strengths and
accomplishments without appearing too opportunistic, eager, egotistical or
self-aggrandizing. Now anyone can communicate with style and substance - in any
situation - and walk away shining like the star they are!”--Amazon
Synopsis: provides creative
and tactical narrative content, pinpoints direct solutions for specific scenarios
in the workplace, interactive and engaging, constructive conversation mapping, empowering,
confidence-boosting material through and through.

“Dr. Lois Frankel reveals why some women roar ahead in their
careers while others stagnate. She's spotted a unique set of behaviors--101 in
all--that women learn in girlhood that sabotage them as adults. Now, in this groundbreaking
guide, she helps you eliminate these unconscious mistakes that could be holding
you back--and offers invaluable coaching tips you can easily incorporate into
your social and business skills. If you recognize and change the behaviors that
say "girl" not "woman", the results will pay off in career opportunities
you never thought possible--and in an image that identifies you as someone with
the power and know-how to occupy the corner office.” --Amazon
Synopsis: coaching strategies to avoid missed opportunities,
critical analysis of inherent and detrimental behaviors of women in the

Pony Tail
Try it yours |
I think it was the “sock bun” that inspired me to start pulling
my hair back more often. Or maybe it is
a seasonal thing, as the weather gets warmer? Hence, I am going to share with you my most favorite
pony-tail style. I don’t know the exact
name of this style but hopefully the pictures and my attempt below at giving
directions will fill in all the blanks.
Pony-tail style guide:
- Absolutely, do not do this pony-tail with freshly washed hair. You will want some dirty product in your hair to give the pony some texture and volume. Although, do as you wish.
- Tease your crown. You are going to want some volume at the crown of your head and if you have bangs, give them a little bit of a tease, too. I tease my hair almost everyday, so this step comes naturally for me. If you prefer an absolutely sleek look, go for it. I think this style is fool proof.
- Lightly brush over the teased mess you have created with a soft-bristle round brush. You will just want to smooth over what rats-nests you may have created. Spray with a firm hold hair spray (or whatever you prefer) to keep the shape.
- Let the hairspray dry completely and gather your hair effortlessly half way between the center of the back of your head and the bottom of your hair line.
- Secure with a nylon hair tie (or whatever hair tie you typically use). Slightly tease the bunch of hair that is now your pony tail for added volume.
- You are going to gather one of the longer strands of hair falling from your pony tail (closest to your scalp). Make sure you’ve got a good handle on the bunch of hair and begin to wrap it around the base of the pony tail (where the hair tie sits). Wrap the hair around until it exhausts itself. Secure and tuck the strands underneath the pony tail with two bobby pins.
- Spray your head as you feel necessary with extra hair spray and presto—you are done!
The whole process takes about 5 minutes, max (even though my
directions could be interpreted as longer then that).
This look is uber chic, totally glamorous and wicked easy to pull-off in a hurry. Hail to the pony tail gods, this look is fabulous!

Shades of Gray
Shower Curtain |
Bathroom Concept |
No, I am not talking about my mood or the popular book
series. But, rather my obsession with
the color gray in regards to home décor.
Recently, I've been adoring (most) shades of gray in a major way; especially
when showcased in the home! Gray is
obviously a neutral color but don’t mistake gray as being boring or drab. I believe the color to be super chic
when paired with crisp classic white or other subtle neutrals such as beige or other
neutral pastel colors.
Gray can also stand as the perfect back splash for accent
colors such as: canary yellow, ocean blue or an electrifying magenta. While the color gray may ordinarily be
perceived as uninteresting; quite the opposite is true if executed properly. Meaning, you can leverage the color to be as
dramatic or simplistic as you are comfortable going with.
To me, the color gray creates an atmosphere of both peace
and tranquility (both attributes I value within a dwelling space). The deeper the shade, the more dramatic
(obviously) your space will feel. Is
your abode in need of some trendy, yet timeless flair?
Try a shade of gray.

A Tale of Two Necklaces
(One)
Inspiration:
Anthropologie “Stormy Seas Necklace”
The scoop: The
original “Stormy Seas Necklace” sold retail, at Anthropologie, somewhere around
$100 to $250 depending on how elaborate the beadwork, etc. Contrary to the necklaces’ popularity, it is
my understanding that Anthropologie is no longer selling this necklace! The good news: there are countless private
jewelers/dealers (think Etsy, EBay, Amazon) that sell their own “knock offs” of
the iconic necklace.
(One) Stormy Seas Necklace |
Where to buy: I
would recommend buying from an Etsy dealer, Fresh Eclectic Ornaments, for the
most comprehensive selection of styles and affordable price. You can even custom order your necklace from
scratch! However, doing a general search
in Google Shopping for “Anthropologie Stormy Seas Necklace” will see an
abundance of options!
Additional Commentary: My only major
suggestion would be to consider selecting a style with a jersey chain. The amount of beadwork makes the necklace
awfully heavy and it is comforting to have soft material lay on the back of
your neck, as opposed to a metal chain.
The other fancy feature about a jersey chain is that you can tie the
necklace to various lengths depending on the neckline of your shirt, etc.
(Two)
Inspiration: JCrew“Bubble Necklace”
(Two) Bubble Neckla |
Where to buy: If you are on a budget, I would recommend buying
the “Bubble Necklace” on EBay. However,
if you are comfortable dropping $150 on the authentic necklace, I would recommend
buying direct from JCrew. Remember: when
purchasing from EBay, you are probably either buying a knock-off or a factory
item. On the EBay site, simply search “JCrewNecklace” and you will see many hits. If
you’d prefer to forgo the bidding process, you can easily purchase within the “Buy
Now” section. A fun necklace at an achingly affordable price? Perfection!
Additional
commentary: Again, if you are
buying the “Bubble Necklace from EBay it is most likely coming from a distributor/dealer/factory
owner in China. So, do not anticipate receiving the necklace
overnight. You should prepare for the
necklace to arrive no sooner than two weeks after your payment goes through, as
it is being shipped from China. I know friends who have bought through these
dealers and they had complete success.
Remember, patience is a virtue!

Purr-fect Pumps!
Animal print, like floral and stripes, seem to have completely overwhelmed my closet.
Whether it be a sassy cheetah, leopard or zebra print—or even a subdued
snakeskin—animal-inspired prints have drawn my attention, season after
season.
Meaning, yes, I am not afraid to wear animal print—even in
the dead of winter! In fact, this
winter, I recall being stuck in a situation in front of my closet trying to pick out an outfit which did not include some kind
of animal print... quite the dilemma, right?
While I think animal print clothing is fabulous, my recent obsession has been animal print footwear (i.e. leopard pumps). I get giddy just thinking of all the styling possibilities associated with throwing on a purr-fect pump (I had to do it!).
Sorry for being a tease, these Madewell pumps have been so popular, they sold out completely. But good God, aren't they gorgeous?
I may be too radical in my theory but consider this: animal
print is really just another
neutral. So have fun with the exquisite textures
and playful prints and don’t be afraid to take a walk on the wild side!

Refresh: Date Night
Sticking to my promise to blog on a more frequent basis, I
couldn’t be happier than to stumble upon this Date Night material. Who wouldn’t be stoked to stumble upon a list
of 77 Date Night Ideas?
Believe it or not, a few weeks back, I referenced one of
these Date Night Idea blog posts and it was a complete success. One of the date suggestions was to buy a
puzzle. So, what did we do? We bought a puzzle at a second-hand book
store for $6 (in which we had in-store credit, so it puzzle was essentially
free), a bottle of red wine and a ball of pizza dough to make a home-made
wood-fired pizza.
I have to tell you, I hadn’t completed a puzzle for at least
ten to fifteen years prior to a few weekends ago but we had an absolute blast! Literally, the puzzle provided some of the
best entertainment we could have asked for.
Not to mention, a puzzle is an engaging way to spend time with your
significant other (i.e. team work, communication, sense of accomplishment,
thought-provoking). Puzzle night was a
blast and I know that Mac enjoyed himself just as much as I did.
If puzzling isn’t your idea of fun, I found these (and added a few) date-night ideas:
- Paris night: get a baguette, French wine, and cheese!
- Blow some steam at the batting cages (yeah!)
- Watch the sunrise, then make breakfast together
- Moonlight hike (check to see when the full moon is in cycle)
- Visit garage sales and refurbish your new-found treasures
- Buy an ethnic cookbook and take a stab at preparing your very own cultural cuisine
- Go kayaking
- Act like a tourist and visit destinations within your community
For more ideas, check out the premier source: 77 Super Fun Date Ideas
Cheers to keeping date night a fresh occasion!

A Splash of Color, Please!
I know I am not alone when I say that color can be a major source
of inspiration for almost any occasion.
Whether you find yourself in a position of selecting a shade of nail
polish at the nail salon or caught in a pickle of choosing a lavender blouse
over its neon green counterpart at your favorite boutique—these color driven
choices exhibit our everyday. And,
for that very reason, is why I am absolutely so in love with fashion, design
and architecture. Color has the power to
motivate and enthuse beyond our wildest expectations. And that, precisely, is why I am in love with
color, color selections, color combinations, color schemes, color palettes
(okay, I think I'm done now).
The following website, Design Seeds, is a concept I fell in
love with before I even knew it existed (if that is even possible?). I first discovered this revolutionary site
while browsing my Pinterest account (go figure!). Friends had posted these neat color
combinations inspired by photographs and I was instantly amused, clicked on the
website and couldn’t get enough of it!
For people who feel hopelessly inspired by color, this site hits the
creativity jackpot spot-on.
I need not say much more about my experience using Design
Seeds; but, I welcome you to browse around and see what creative journey this site
has in store for you.
Do you have a new project you are working on around the house? Are you planning a wedding or pitching a concept at work? These color combo palettes may just be the solution to elevate your idea to the next level. Or, do you simply feeling bare-bones dull and uninspired and need a dose of color inspiration? Open Design seeds and you’ll feel instantly amused. My philosophy being: Design Seeds was created to help you appreciate the color around you so you, too, can live brilliantly!

Cinco de Mayo
Blackberry Margarita |
Tomorrow
is Cinco de Mayo; do you have any fun festivities planned? Will you make
a margarita from scratch? Brew some delicious homemade sangria?
Gather with friends for a Mexican fiesta equipped with spicy fajitas, fresh
guacamole and/or crunchy tacos? The possibilities seem limitless.
And, on that note, I seem to have developed quite the appetite!
What's
more thirst quenching than an ice cold margarita?
This
blackberry margarita looks like a refreshing spin on the classical margarita
and a fusion of flavors I’d love to try.
I
have not made this recipe but my mouth is watering just looking at those juicy
berries!
Ingredients
For the Blackberry Syrup:
1 cup blackberries (fresh preferred but frozen (thawed) will work)
¾ cup simple syrup

2 oz blackberry syrup
1 oz triple sec

Kombucha
Cherry Chia Kombucha |
Oh hey, blog. Nice to
see you, again. I’ve seen I’ve neglected
you, again. I am sorry and I offer my
sincerest apologies.
Okay, so what’s new in the life of Rachel? Not too much I’d say. I am so happy spring has officially
arrived. With a trace of color on my
skin, I am happy to report I have been incorporating pastels into my wardrobe
like its my j-o-b and the pastel colors make me feel extra feminine and
youthful (not a bad combo, eh?). Mixing
the pastel pieces with bold bright hues has been a fun way to remix my spring closet. Statement necklaces have continued to inspire
me and my collection seems to be growing at an exponential rate.
Also, I have discovered a deep obsession for drinking
Kombucha (ancient fermented tea elixir).
I started writing a blog post on my love for Kombucha last week but I
didn’t have the motivation to finish and post it, oops! So maybe I’ll do a brief recap here and now
to get the whole thing over with.
Bottom line: I highly recommend the GT’s Synergy Kombucha. My favorite flavors are: Cosmic Cranberry,
Gingerade and my beloved Cherry Chia. Kombucha
offers a multitude health benefits including: increased energy levels, a
decreased appetite, an aid in digestion, healthier skin and hair, and even a
stronger immune system. Be careful, this
product is dangerously addicting. Also, I do know a few people who have had adverse
reactions to this product and I do believe this product is a natural diuretic, so
be easy if you are a Kombucha virgin!
Also, many of the flavors (especially the originals) are fermented;
therefore, do not shake before opening unless you are prepared to be sprayed.
My favorite flavor, as mentioned above, is the Cherry Chia. The Chia flavors contain chia seeds and come
in three delicious flavors (grape, raspberry and cherry). The chia seeds bring their own added health
benefits to the already healthy beverage.
Drinking the Chia Kombucha is similar to sipping on liquid Jello—it is
that much fun! The consistency of the
tea is so fun and enjoyable to drink.
What more? The chia seed is a
nutrient-rich super food that provides sustained energy for your body. How so?
The chia seed is packed with more than 8 times the omega-3’s found in
salmon and contains more antioxidants than blueberries and more fiber than
oatmeal. A truly incredible super food,
indeed.
